Dash Phenomenon

Some months back,

I was travelling back home in employer's late evening shuttle. I was sitting in the first row, next to driver the seat where cleaner usually sits. One of the female employee was about to get down near KMC. The bus stops infront of KMC. She asked the driver to open the door when the bus was waiting for traffic signal at Ega theatre. When the driver opened the door, the girl was on phone, when she realized the door was opened for her, the signal turned green and finally the driver stopped the bus few yards than the usual stop at KMC,possibly irked by the girl.
The girl out of anger yelled at the driver

"F$%K Y$U"

That was the first time i heard the a girl using the F word. Well, this blog is not about a girls speaking bad words but then i have seen/heard local women when the fight on roads for drinking water with foul language in tamil which will melt your ears. But this was the first time all my life i heard a girl using english bad word esp F word.

I never liked the usage of F word and it is not part of my speaking vocabulary. Even when i chat, i refrain from using them. When i look back, the foul language vocabulary, in school it was maximum nayyee, panni (dogs/pigs) but in college so many around using all kinds foul language in various languages. I never knew what they meant when i heard them for the first time. There was a senior in my bus for whom they added an initial O infront of his name because every sentence he spoke there was o#$% in it.Typically his sentence starts with a "oh".I was def not an angel in college but my usage was very limited and confined to few friends esp one whom i considered very close. After joining work, the usage of words have died down because the college gang and those set of friends whom you are close with arent around. It is not a cardinal sin in using bad words. Most of times people use to vent out frustration and anger! Some use them when they are excited esp when they are awed by seeing something. I dont think any of us really mean what we speak when it comes to foul language especially. But sometimes you have to give back esp on roads in Chennai, in typically tamil bad words for those who dont adhere rules and point fingers at you!

Recently, i was talking to committed VIGNESH. He has been source of various theories to me esp the ladder theory! He was talking about dash phenomenon. It is funny when you start speaking with dashes esp in tamil

"Seriyana dash da avan"

"Code dash madiri irruku "

"Enda dash polapuku adhuvey mel da"

"Periya dashnu nenaipu vera..."

It doesn't sound offensive, yeah you guessed it we all know that dash is a bad word but if can left to your imagination what bad word that is!!There are other forms like duck etc.....but then dash sounds nice to me :)

Funnier thing is if you add one more dash to it!!

"he is one hella of double dash fella"

I hope this is a not a double dash post :)!!Thanks for patience!!

Recently i met my friend at work. Him and myself, always exchange pleasantries in dash style during college. He told me "Nirmal, i dont talk bad words anymore...". I was quite surprised because he was the one who used them most of times during our college days. I was quite curious why he stopped..."Ava sollirka kettavarthalam use panna kudhadhunu....decenta pesanum..so nanum follow pannitu irruken....."

Eppidiyum sela nallavanga(dash pasanga) irrukangapa !!!!

Look Ahead Meeting

2:30 pm

Post lunch sessions are the hardest for any one to focus on work. I generally read and do non technical work since it doesn’t require much concentration. I was filling up my effort sheets for the previous week and someone placed hand over my shoulder.

I turned back and it was Karthik.

K: “I want to talk to you …”

Me: “Now….okies..let go out and talk….”

We walked towards the exit of the wing. There is a balcony which overlooks a lake(actually a marsh land) near by. Since it was nearing tea time, Karthik suggested that we can have tea now. So both of us walked towards pantry took coffee/tea cups to that balcony.

K:” I have filed my resignation today.”

Me:” what …are you joking…?”

K: “ No…I have sent my resume to manager and HR just now and thought of telling you.”

Me: “ I am shocked….where are you heading…?”

K: “ XYZ tech, .….they give me 20% hike…and 25K joining bonus if I join them in before this month end”

Me:” cool…what role..are you moving to application development?”

K: “ No I am joining a different BU”

As we chatting about other details of his pay package, Karthik got a phone call, I could make out it was a HR of the new company where he intends to join, I signalled to him while he was talking that I am going to my cubicle.

I had the tea cup in my hand so I thought I will place them in pantry. As I walking Karthik’s decision occupied my mind.

Karthik was one of the brightest stars of our project. I always thought him as sun, though there are good number of moons , sun is the one and it is special always. Only last week, he was voted the best performer for the third consecutive year. I am firm believer of the theory you can produce exceptional results at work unless you really like what you do. If someone can win it thrice in a row that shows how much he enjoys his work. He was given the attention he deserved and project manager’s pet. Him and I though we compete at work, we shared a good professional relationship and understanding. Once we applied for onsite together, he got shortlisted and I got a plain reject but was happy to hear he got select. Everyone likes him because he never turned off anyone both technically. In short he was a GOTO guy in our account, some dubbed him as Karthikopedia for his knowledge on the product and nicest guys I met at work.

Everybody is replaceable in this field. Companies are process oriented and hence they can identify another resource to replace him. Last quarter a VP of my domain left, he had served for 25 years,he was instrumental in turning ours into a profit making domain. We thought our domain not make great profits but last quarter results proved us wrong, we did better because the one who replaced him relished the role and took it a step higher. So even Karthik quits, replacement will be found and whether he/she can rise to the occasion has to be answered. But he would be missed definitely.

There are many reasons why engineers quit, the most primary reason would be hike factor higher pay, higher designation/role, bad supervisors, appraisal debacles, better technology work or work which one is passionate to do,dream company and more.Karthik somehow dint fit into any of those reasons I thought off. He was in good role, decent pay upto market standards, excellent rapport with senior managers. Timing of his exit was surprising and his pay hike was very less and in normal market he could easily get double. Knowing him and his career aspirations, he wanted to move into application programming and new profile dint match it either.

I kept the cup in the sink. I saw Harini, another colleague from a different project, who returned from vacation. She had a very thick glittering gold chain, quite distracting to see it and it reminded me that she has returned from marriage. I wished her happy married life and apologized that I couldn’t make it to reception on that day.

I went back to my seat and opened in my outlook.Harini's gold chain reminded me of something.I was searching my personal folder pst for an email. I opened Anuksha’s marriage invitation email. She was getting married this month end.Myself, Anuksha and Karthik once worked together in project two years back.It was even more confusing after reading her invitation.

Both seemed to be mutually independent events but then.

I wished Karthik to hang on but ....time has to answer ....

Karthik was summoned by senior managers, they offered him everything, hike, designation change, onsite long term/short term, relocation, project change,h1b filing and everything he dint ask for. After 2 weeks, Karthik changed his mind, modestly choose relocation to north for another project under same BU head, few weeks later Anu resigned after her marriage.

When Karthik returned back after six months, Requirement Gathering happened.

Gladwell's Outliers

I read this book recently when i was in a planned vacation at my dad's native place. I like Gladwell's style of writing. I have read his second book, BLINK which is one of best books in the non fiction category i have read. Blink is an exciting book not just to read but also to reflect and apply them to real life! If you are someone who is fascinated by human minds or anything to do with thinking, blink is a must read.

In Outliers, Gladwell speaks about success. Success how we see it? Is it an individual trait? Is it a person's brilliance or high IQ level or hard work or luck? But we miss the most important point where are these successful people from? when and where they are born? We overlook at few aspects which made them successful and often we define success in a crude way. Outliers speaks about the opportunities which some successful people got at times of adversity. Gladwell writes about the software giants like Bill Gates and Bill Joy. To be a successful software entrepreneur you must have born in a particular time frame in USA and if you were born then there is an higher chance of becoming one! That part of the book where he speaks about Gates life before 17 reminds us the opportunities Bill Gates seized ! One of the most interesting parts of this book is about Gates success story is that he went to a Lakeside school which had computer terminal. This book speaks about many other success stories of Canadian ice hockey players, industrialists, lawyers etc.

Towards the end, Gladwell speaks about the ethnic theory of plane crashes. This chapter is my favorite after the second chapter where he talks about Bill Gates. How plane crashes happen? Why they happen? It is more like reading a thriller!

What i love about Gladwell's books is the facts he places before his theories and then argues based on facts. One of the comparisons which i liked the most is about the basket ball player's height. Beyond a point whether the player is 6 4" or 6 8" height doesn't matter because the player is tall enough to play basketball. Beyond 6 feet it finally comes down to player's skill and height doesn't matter that much. He draws comparison of height with human IQs as in beyond a point IQ doesn't matter to success as one of his subjects described in the book has as IQ of 197 compare with Einstein's 150. To put in simple term's higher IQ is doesn't guarantee success and beyond a point it really doesnt matter!

This book is not about rags to riches success story but it is all about the opportunities that these people got and made it big in their lives.

I am not a book person. It is not that i dont have time for reading but i am more interested in writing than reading books. Till 20 years, i never attempted even reading a novel.Only book i read till 20 was a self help book called "Power of Positive Thinking" by Normal Vincent Peale. Finally, in 7th sem in college, i tried my hand in reading a novel by Dan Brown (everyone at that time were reading A&D and DaVinci Code). After joining work, i read more self help books like Alchemist,Robin Sharma's Monk who sold his Ferrari, Saint Surfer & CEO and some management style books Who moved my cheese and One Minute Manager! I was quite tempted to read Fountain read after seeing it in a profile but i gave up after reading 60 pages. It was just too much for my head. Why i say this is because i dont know how other author's write fiction and non fiction stuff. So may be for a voracious reader of different genres this book might not appeal at all. For someone like me who likes Self-Help genre of books this book is fascinating. But if you are someone who is like me who hasnt read much but interested in reading self helf stuff, you should give a try at Outliers and Blink!

One of my senior members of my team at work attended a training for aspiring Project Managers. The trainer for that program has suggested Gladwell's Blink is a must read for the trainees of that program!Gladwell's books are very popular among trainers and HR people!

Happy Reading!

Kodai Kala Katre

Vetri and his boys had an awesome time in Tempe. They have formed a garage band and trying out some of the classic songs that be played in guitar + singing them. I chanced to listen to them and i humbly request anyone who has reached this page to listen to them too.I guess you enjoy the wonderful music/awesome singing by team Vetri. My favorite of all is Kodai Kala Katre and Pattu Pada Va.

Vetri and Myself, classmates in college and we share couple of common interests. Two things which i always lookup to him is a) creative writing and b) Guitarist. His creative writing skills are quite remarkable and his works speaks for himself. He has written an hilarious spoof about our batch guys. He has posted couple of short stories in my blog (he used to post as a Guest). I have been asking him to start a blog for a long long time and atlast i am really glad he has one for himself and he has posted his best posts there. His thriller genre was perhaps an inspiration for me to write a short story called Requirement Gathering :).

Kodai Kala Katre is probably one of the easier song to play in guitar ie to strum and sing. One of Illayaraja's classic in Panner Pushpangal movie.
Chords are available here.

Singing is a nightmare for someone like me with bad voice. I am not even close to a rest room singer. So generally i team up with my buddy. So i play the guitar in that scale and humm mildly and later he sings over it and so the final product is like my guitaring with his voice. That's how Iru Vizhi happened!!I might be actually quite old to start learning singing from teacher. But i get tips from friends on how to sing better. I would start panting after singing few lines and also had problems with breathing while singing. Problem with me was i tried to sing from throat. I think we have sing from chest and not from the throat and that gives a better feel to the song!!I have been practicing singing a lot these days especially the time i walk from home to bus stop or in bus when no one sits in front of me or behind me. Definitely this is by far the best i could attempt.
I dont know why only half the song is available in embed so try it here...final.wma -

Other day, i happened to see Renu Kannan, Airtel Super Singer finalists, in bus bay at work. She happens to work other office and she looked so simple and very different that what i have seen her on TV. What a talent she is! I am not a regular watcher of Airtel Super Singer but only thing was i dint want Raginisri to win and any other person apart from her wining was ok!!

If Airtel Super Singer exists why not a Sodhapal Singer!!
I would gladly be one !!!

Namma Swetha

Someday, some week, last month!

I was checking my emails at work. I saw another marriage invitation. Though the invite was from my training batch group id, I couldn't place the person who has sent me the invite! My (former)colleague who also joined in the same training batch suggested i should try out finder. Finder is a internal site which displays information about assignment and information about manager and BU. In fact i wrote a small application in VB script which will fetch that page if you give the email id of employee. Yes FINDER is mostly used for FINDing HER or FIND(H)ER. I was happy that a tool group in charge accepted my application! It saves time basically that you dont need to log in to an internal site etc but gives the info of the person in one click!! I was overwhelmed when lots of people downloaded that application!

After seeing the finder info, i was able to place the person! Next person who came to my mind was He1. I keep off from window's messenger at work! I log in once in a while but not a regular! I logged in and to see if He1 was there!

Seeing the invitation! I buzzed him and initiated the conversation! For a joke i started like
"Commiserations Machi...saw her marriage invite!! "

Well, him and her were seen hanging out most of times during the training batch and also after that! Well as expected everyone (including the crowd) as always started rumours like friendship, brotherhood, etc etc!!But i know this guy to an extent! He was very honest and very truthful kinds! Sometimes being very truthful doesnt help! One of those genuine kinds so being a friend i could clearly make out what he has/had for her!! But then whats the point to have vested interests and not express but he travelled onsite and he returned after 2 years! Perhaps that distance might have played the spoiler in his relationship!!!

I was quite sarcastic to ask him whether he would attend her wedding!!
He gave prompt reply "yeah da....going to go and serve curd rice and pickles!!"

I laughed the most on seeing his reply.Sometimes chat conversations make you laugh the most !!! People around you wonder why laugh looking at the monitor. I know perhaps he has gone through it and now completely out of it.

Few years back, few of my colleagues would call another colleague at work "You will be serving Sambar Rice". The idea was in one of Dr Kuruvi's old movie, actor Vijay serves sambar rice and sings a song in his lover's marriage! I think the movie was a super hit but the climax was something like one love/true love kinds which has almost vanished over years! If that movie is released now it would be sure flop because people just cant accept that ending!!

This is a heavy marriage season!

There are so many wedding/receptions to attend! I went to my colleagues reception, midweek. It was one of the grandest receptions i have ever attended! They were serving chat items as snacks which i thought was served only in Marwadi marriages! There were couple of 46" LCD TVs and crane with an automatic camera much like the ones which you see in T20 cricket running around the hall and a very famous music band for entertaining! They were singing some of Ilayaraja's classic songs and setting up the mood! Food was even better with the number of dishes served there was no place in the plate to have all of them!!

I thought of dedicating this song to all those guys/gals who got married and are getting married in this heavy marriage season!!

Happy Married Life!!!

One of my good companions who also attended the reception jovially asked me.
"Nirmal....Minnale madiri edavichu enda receptionla work out aguma....?"

For once i decided to be optimistic and replied
"Kandipa Nadakalam ....edhula elati adhuta receptionla........."

Guus Hiddink:- Manager with Midas Touch

Manager:-

His Team:-

*Added Pictures after Chelsea's FA cup
victory @ Wembley (Original post was published on May 24th)

When i joined work, there was a talk about a manager who was very popular among the freshers of my batch. I was very inquisitive to know why everyone was excited to work in his projects. I used to see him everyday but never spoke except he would say hi or sometimes i would say hi, after 8 months i got to work under him for a project. Only then i realized why those who worked under him before wanted to be in his projects!

Irrespective of what happens @ Wembley next weekend, Guss Hiddink would end up as one of the greatest care taker managers in club football history. What a remarkable turnaround it has been since Feb. What amazes me the most is same set of professional players who play in the more or less same formation but under different manager yield better results. Some players who were sidelined played exceedingly well under him. To his credit, he has lost only 1 @ Chelsea!.A current Arsenal player remarked him as "Magician" because of his tactics. Perhaps some of his master stroke tactics included changing positions of Ballack and Essien against Liverpool @ Anfield where Gerrard was totally man marked by Essien. I watched that match live and Chelsea played very well. Another would be what many claimed negative football in Nou Camp. It was a tactical decision to defend and not concede goals. Many football experts felt that a team should not play football to opposition strengths. Bayern played attacking football and they ended up 0-4 in 25 mins and they totally lost the match.

I recently read an article by my chairman who has rewarded 55 out of 11K managers in my employer as best People Managers. He speaks about the qualities of a good manager and why some managers are very successful. Managers play such a vital role in success of the team. It is primary job of manager is to motivate and get the best out of them. That is the primary reason they are paid so much. Chelsea is perhaps a case study. Same players different results under different managers.

This season, i have watched more than 95% of Chelsea's weekend matches. Some Sundays have been special Super Sundays. I would buy 2 Litre coke, chocolates, cakes, maggi etc etc and watch special big Chelsea football matches. I just enjoy those 2 hours watching TV.It is something for which i eagerly wait for the weekend to arrive.Though there used to interrupts from younger sibiling to watch tamil shows, these days even that doesnt happen. With season ending today, weekends may become boring. T20 WC in June, Ashes in July and then again the next season.

Eagerly waiting for Aug and for another season of EPL.

Champions of Europe!!!

This blog post is dedicated to Vikram.
Probably the biggest Barca fan here i know!!

Despite all the experts who claimed it would be easy win for ManU, Barca truely deserved the trophy! They have been in murdering form in their league . Before the match, many raised concerns how the left back/right back are going to stop Ronaldo/Rooney. I watched the final for 45 mins and when i switched off the TV i just hoped that ManU wouldnt win with injury time goals. I read an article in Ergo, free circulation paper titled MESSIMUS MAXIMUS which speaks about Barca's triumph . This article compares Messi to a Roman emperor who has single handedly won the war with help of his generals(Xavi & Ineista). Messi has a bad record of scoring against English Clubs (1 goal in last 10 matches) and he is setting records straight!

I love the way the football player's celebrate after winning with trophies. I guess Cricket has adopted celebration style from football recently. Watching celebration video's leaves you with a feel good feeling.

I can just imagine how happy he would be!
For someone who stayed by previous night before 12std public exams to watch 'El Clasico' and has been supporting Barca since 10th std.(that's like 10 years)!!

He is the one who introduced me to follow this beautiful game.
This is for you Vikram!!

Non Returning Indians

Wednesday,
I voted for the third time (2 Lok Saba , 1 state). I had to stand in the queue for more than 2 hours for my turn. Lots of people turned up to vote that day. It was in a nearby school and enthusiasm shown by people was amazing. Looking at those who turned up to vote were all less than middle class people. I live in suburb part of Chennai so I cant expect some people coming in fancy cars to vote. I was very surprised to see lots of old (70+) people who had come to vote. There was a grandmother who had to be carried to the booth to caste her vote. Looking at her age and conditions it was quite scary considering the heat factor that day, was very surprised to see her come to vote. I am not sure how many of us would even consider going to vote if we were sick on that day.

I hope more educated people would come forward and vote and perhaps talk about blaming the Govt. What irks me the most is handful of erudite crowd (padicha localdesi) and their attitude towards elections. For them it is another holiday. They never would have gone to ration shop near by and perhaps for them they really dont care who wins the elections but these are the people who would crib the most "Govt did nothing".

Recently i was talking to my friend in NY on chat. He was opining about current status of job market there. He was telling me a case of his senior who has opted to do another masters program (not phd) so that it would keep in USA for some more time. Though he is not all that interested, he seems to pursue the program because he doesnt want to return to india and wants to settle there. What shocked me the most was views "Once you live here for sometime you wont like to go back to India and live".

Few might share similar thoughts on living or life style but i know a lot of people who want to return back as India gives a good enough opportunity. It is immature to compare two countries head to head and talk about benefits of living and i can never compare lifestyle because i have never been there. But these padicha paradesi's should never talk about living in india as a factor for pursing another master's program because these same people have hanged around here for 2 decades before deciding to move away to another country for brighter prospects.  They have used education given by this country to grow further and should have some respect for homeland.

What is more puzzling is these padicha desi's when they get married and have kids they plan or think about returning to India with views "Indian education system is the best and kids grow with values about respecting parents". Probably we must ask them whether the standard of living matters when it comes to education for kids.

Such people would always claim India is dirty, unhygienic, unsafe(of late), quota or many more reasons . But people have to realize for a country like India to grow, it has to grow together , all communities, all societies , all religions together. If you look at the growth of western countries or oriental countries large percent(majority) of the people would belong to same race, speak same language and follow one religion but look at ours. How many languages, How many religions, how many castes and still we are together and growing. This might be the reason why we havnt grown as those countries.

I am not against American pursuit of life but one must also not forgot what made them to get there. I find mixed reactions whenever it comes to people's views about US. Some just love that country and enjoy the most. They like everything about that country and the freedom they get there. Some get the feel they should return to India as US in a long run would be a bad idea. But that country has changed many people's views. A good friend of mine when was leaving to US told me he intends to work there for two years after graduation to make return on investment and come back home and settle down. When he had come down for stamping i was surprised to hear him say "i live in the 7th largest GDP in the world..i prefer to stay here than return" (he was referring to CA).

I recently came across an article where a big bosses (VP level) from Silicon Valley are returning to India. India can accommodate everyone but the adopted country cannot on a longer run! I hope these people stick to their stand about India and India would surprise them one day.

Someday Dr Abdul Kalam's 2020 dream would come true!

Owned Communities

Next month, i complete 5 years in all forms of social networking . It started with my school friend sending an invite for orkut . Though i have not totally lost interests towards social networking  but these days i am not all that active in orkut as i was in second year (first year after leaving college) now instead of scrapping it has become a place where you just see the updates of friends on home page and probably see the scrapbooks to know what they are upto to!

But i have never deleted my account as handful of my friends did. They lost their cool or temper or probably hurt with their friend's attitude towards them or probably out of anger or some personal reason. But best part is all those quit with attitude "i dont want to keep in touch with anyone" joined back either in anonymous profile or limited profile. You just cant ignore or avoid social networking!

One thing good about the social networking is the communities. Personally it helps me to identify person's interest even actually without knowing them. Any profile i come across, first thing i would do even ahead of seeing albums (if open) or testimonials is to go through their communities. But best part is not many of us effectively use communities. Best example is my college group which has not posted for almost 2 years.I check up Tamil Cinema forum for any reviews about movies ahead of Indiaglitz of Sify because here you get a totally unbiased opinion.

I started couple of communities as well. You can show your interests for person/individuals but i never liked any anti-communities of individuals/nations/clubs. I never joined or created one. I prefer to join communities which my interests. I prefer to keep things which i dont like to myself rather than explicitly showing.

I just have a huge admiration and fascination towards LINUX . I had an aspiration to work in proper linux based project at work. I got an opportunity to work in a Residential Gateway project but as a tester. I enjoyed those five months which is like 'the best days of my work'. I had do ixp board bring up and flash linux image. I was fresher then so my understanding of the project was very limited but i enjoyed working in linux.  Later, earlier this year, i got another opportunity to work in scoping for a project Network simulator which was supposed to replace Traffic Generator. Traffic generator equipments are quite costly so we proposed an open source approach. I complied linux kernel 2.6.28 and worked for short time in prototype (Kernel module) for that Network simulator. Though my stint was again short i just loved every bit of it.

It was surprising there was no communities in 2k5 for the Torvalds so i created one!

Lollu Sabha is one of best comedy shows. It has an amazing fan following esp when Santhanam/Jeeva were around. Every Thursday first thing we discussed in bus enroute to college was about previous night's Lollu Sabha show. Swaminathan is my favorite of all. He may not have a fan following of Manohar but he is one of finest comedians in that show.
To me he is one of the pillars of the show.

I just love this song. I listen to it almost everyday. It is a feel good song. I set this song as my hello tune 3 years back and i havent changed it till date! One of the finest compositions of Harris Jeyaraj and sung really well by Harish Ragavendra!

I generally dont like joining any of these emotional communities like "I love my sister", "I love my brother" etc etc. But this is one of interesting debates which i am never able to come in terms with. Am i a heart or head? It was heavily inspired from my past blog post.

If you dint know
Despite all these photo albums and privacy features orkut provides,i am not sure how many know that all orkut albums can be easily shared. Try this out, open some random photo in your album or your friends (locked album) and click the image and drag and drop to chat window , you will end up the image link of that photo which can be opened in a browser without any login/password. I dint believe this until i tried it myself and was really surprised! If you still dont believe it, try it now ASAP!!
